Mercedes-Benz The origins of the Daimler-Benz company founded through a merger in 1926 date back to the mid-1880s, when Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900), Wilhelm Maybach (1846-1929), and Karl Benz (1844-1929) independently invented the internal combustion engine-powered automobile, in Germany, as they were almost sixty miles apart, these pioneers were unaware of each other's early work. Since the early days of the company the car model name would be in the form of 500E where the engine volume made up the first three numbers and the last letter(s) represented the type of engine and/or chassis; for example: "E" for fuel injection ("Einspritzung" in German), "D" for Diesel, "L" for long wheelbase etc.

It was Volkswagen to introduce the Audi brand to the United States for the 1970 model year. The first new car of this line was the Audi 100 of 1968. This was soon followed by the Audi 80/Fox (which formed the basis for the 1973 Volkswagen Passat) in 1972 and the Audi 50 (later, Volkswagen Polo) in 1974. In 1980, the "quattro" model was introduced, a turbocharged coupe which was also the first German large-scale production vehicle to feature full-time all-wheel drive through a center differential. In 1985, with the Auto Union and NSU, the company's official name was now shortened to "Audi AG". As the Passat-based Audi 80 was beginning to develop a kind of "grandfather's car" image in 1986, the type 89 was introduced.

Peugeot is a main French car brand, it is part of PSA Peugeot Citroen. Peugeot is also the second largest automaker in Europe, after Volkswagen. Its headquarters are based in Paris, Avenue de la Grande Armee. Peugeot chooses the names used on its models as followes: x0y or x00y, where "x" describes the size of the car, hence its class and "y" describes the model number (the higher the number, the newer the model). Thus a Peugeot 406 is in a bigger class and it's newer than a Peugeot 305. This rule has its exceptions: for example the Peugeot 309 came out before the Peugeot 306 - the out-of-rule number signified the 309's Talbot underpinnings rather than it coming from a Peugeot name-line. Variants are also excluded: the 206 SW, for instance, is about the same length as a "40y" car.
